Allison Dantus, a regular volunteer at Millburn Red Cross blood drives, receives her 1-gallon pin from blood drive co-chair Jack Clemence

“Our summer blood drives ended on the most perfect day of the summer” said blood drive co-chair Jack Clemence, “and even two of our chairpersons are on vacation.”  The Millburn Red Cross blood drive, held at the Millburn Library on Aug. 21, 2010 attracted 63 donors even with the library being closed on Saturdays during the month of August.

Several donors were presented “gallon donation pins”, including Allison Dantus (1-gallon), Eileen Sheets (1-gallon) and Anne Druck (3-gallons).  Along with being a blood donor, Allison is also one of the volunteers that regularly works at the blood drive canteen.  The drive netted 59 units of much needed blood.  One young mother brought her 5 year old son and 2 year old daughter to watch her donate.  While she went through the donation process, her children were well cared for by the volunteers at the drive.

There is presently a shortage of blood type “O-“supply so donors with that blood type are urged to come to our future drives.  The American Red Cross supplies about half the blood products used in the country, and even more in case of emergencies.  Our Millburn-Short Hills Red Cross holds monthly drives at the Millburn Public Library located at 200 Glen Ave.  The next Library blood drive will be held on Saturday, September 25, from 10 AM to 4 PM.

Blood donors must be in good general health and weigh at least 110 pounds. They must know their Social Security number and bring a signed or picture ID.  Eight weeks are required between donations.  Those whose last donation was on June 26 or earlier will be eligible to donate on September 25.  Some travel restrictions apply.  For more information, call the local chapter at 973-379-4198.
