Blood Drive December 2011

Holiday Donors Give Gift of Life

Eighty-three donors came to the Millburn Red Cross Blood Drive Dec. 10 and gave "the gift of life" in the form of 78 units of blood to needy individuals.

Millicent Denton is the top donor at the Millburn library Red Cross blood drives having made 132 donations.

"It is always hard to predict how many donors will show up in the busy holiday season," said blood drive co-chairman Jack Clemence. "Looking at past records, there have been as little as 47 donors and as many as 149 donors that have come to our December drive. "

Within the next six months, the Millburn-Short Hills Red Cross will reach the milestone of collecting 1,000 gallons of blood. The chapter is now ranked fifth for total collections of blood units in all of New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania.

Organizers credit the strong showing as a tribute to all the loyal donors that come to the local drives.

The need for blood in local hospitals has become even more urgent during the winter months so organizers hope to have a good turnout of donors at the next drive scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Millburn Free Public Library.

Winter Storm Safety & Preparedness

Are You Winter Storm Ready?

Winter Storm ReadyTis the season to be prepared for winter storms.  As Charley Shimanski, Disaster Services Senior Vice President for the American Red Cross, said, “We’re heading into winter, when blizzards and bitter cold can be a challenge in some parts of the country.”

A winter storm may be just a moderate snowfall lasting a few hours, or a dangerous blizzard that lasts for several days. Many bring dangerously low temperatures with them, along with strong winds, ice, sleet and freezing rain.

The Red Cross recommends steps you can take to be prepared before the storm hits.

  • Winterize your vehicle and keep the gas tank full to keep the fuel line from freezing.
  • Insulate your home & install storm windows/cover the windows with plastic to keep cold air out.
  • Maintain your heating equipment, and have your chimney cleaned and inspected.
  • Dress in layers of lightweight clothing, and wear mittens and a hat that covers your ears.
  • Wear waterproof, insulated boots to keep your feet warm and dry and to maintain your footing in ice and snow.
  • If a storm is coming your way, minimize travel. Keep a disaster supplies kit in your vehicle.
  • Bring pets/companion animals inside during winter weather. Move other animals or livestock to sheltered areas and make sure their drinking water doesn’t freeze.
  • During extreme cold, running water, even at a trickle, helps prevent pipes from freezing.
